  • After the Americans, the British raced to install solar power because of high electricity prices

Domestic electricity prices in the UK in January increased nearly 70% compared to the same period in 2022. In this context, many families choose to install additional solar panels.

AP news agency quoted the latest data showing that solar power installation activities at household scale in the UK in 2022 have doubled compared to the same period in 2022.

It’s 10 a.m. but Mr. Kumi Thiruchelvam’s family (London, England) has not yet had to consume any electricity from the national grid system. That’s because his family switched to using the newly installed rooftop solar power system.

The cost of installing solar power ranges from 12,000 – 13,000 pounds, equivalent to more than 370 million VND. The cost is large, but many families still decide to invest, in the context of the energy crisis in Europe that shows no signs of easing soon.

“We have 24 solar panels out front. Current systems can be easily upgraded to store solar energy in the form of batteries. It will be even more useful if summer comes,” said Mr. Kumi Thiruchelvam, a resident of London, England.

On average, Mr. Thiruchelvam’s family consumes about 12,000 electricity per year, currently 2/3 of which has been replaced by solar power.

Registration for installation is just a click away. The house’s electricity data will be automatically calculated, converted into how many solar panels.

The question they ask most often to stakeholders is where does England, which is famous for being a foggy country, get enough sunlight to help get electricity from the rooftop solar power system?

“Even though the UK has more cloudy days than any other European country, the UK is actually one of Europe’s leading producers of solar energy. The output of solar power generated from is comparable to Germany or Spain. Therefore, consumers should feel secure when installing these systems,” said Mr. Jina Kwon, General Director of electricity retail company Otovo, UK.

Economic experts calculate that the increase in retail electricity prices is partly due to the recent energy crisis. A household that can turn off appliances and limit electricity use can only save about $3,000 a year. Instead of saving, people can consider installing solar power as a long-term investment, not to mention storage technology is also very developed and reasonably priced.
